In 1945 SCHMETZ was founded as a manufacturer of various industrial furnaces in Menden, near Dortmund, Germany. The company soon focused on the production of vacuum furnaces that subsequently were developed with close contact to the customer to increase the capacity of each load and the speed of the process. With its first overpressure gas quench furnace and their two-direction cooling system SCHMETZ quickly became a market leader in 1982. In 1987 its (by SCHMETZ itself developed) convective heating process set the industry standard. In the late 1990s SCHMETZ GmbH was the first manufacturer to establish a 2 chamber gas quench furnace, its "2PLUS" model. Recently the system "COOL PLUS" was added for a cycle with integrated "sub zero" treatment to optimise metallurgical results regarding retained austenite.
