Omani Pipe Manufacturer Wins L&T Order

Omani pipe manufacturer TMK Gulf International Pipe Industry (TMK GIPI) has won an order to supply Larsen & Toubro’s (L&T) Hydrocarbon (Oman branch) with 1,400 tonnes of 3LPE coated line pipes for the Yibal GGP third stage depletion compression gas project.

The 3LPE coating system is a multi-layer coating structure comprising three coating materials of fusion bonded epoxy (FBE), copolymer adhesive and PE or PP top coats for steel pipe anti-corrosion.

TMK IPSCO plans to build a new facility in Northern Kentucky that will coat steel pipes for the growing oil and natural gas distribution segment, the company confirmed Tuesday.

The company could begin building the new $19.8 million development this summer, a company spokesman said. It would be the company's first steel coating facility.

The state of Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority granted preliminary approval last week to giving $650,000 in tax credits over 10 years. The company has a plant in Wilder at 100 Steel Plant Road, and the new facility would be adjacent to the existing one.

U.S. Steel Corp., the largest domestic producer of the metal, said it will close two of its mills that make tubes used by oil and natural gas companies as the U.S. Commerce Department reviews an anti-dumping case.

U.S. Steel will indefinitely idle unprofitable mills in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, and Bellville, Texas, in early August, the Pittsburgh-based company reported. The two plants employ 260 workers, it said.

The Pennsylvania tube mill has annual capacity of 315,000 tons while the Texas plant can produce 100,000 tons a year. U.S. Steel’s tubular division, comprising 10 mills in 2013, had capacity of 2.8 million tons a year in 2013, according to a company filing.

Barrett Offshore Tubes, part of Barrett Steel Group, has invested more than GBP 1 million at one of its sites as part of the company's commitment to the renewable energy market, particularly the offshore wind turbine industry. The investment, which has resulted in the creation of six jobs, includes a 12 meter capacity loading system and a tube laser at the Bradford-headquartered company's Scunthorpe site.
