U.S. Steel Corp. has announced layoffs in Lorain, less than a week after a tariff decision sent stock prices for domestic steel-tube makers plummeting. 

According to the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram, the company says it is “adjusting production” as a result of business conditions. It does not say how many people will lose their jobs or when. 

The United Steelworkers local represents about 1,200 of those working at the U.S. Steel plant and the Republic Steel plant next door.

The Van Leeuwen Pipe and Tube Group has acquired Tubexpress, a Brazilian distribution company supplying pipes and tubes to the (petro)chemical and oil and gas industry. The acquisition is effective from the 1st of January, 2014.

$1.8 Million Project to Update Gas Pi...

Columbia Gas will spend $1.8 million to replace old pipe and some indoor gas meters in a neighborhood near Burnett Road and High Street beginning this month.

The project covers the area south of High Street, north of Morton Drive, east of Burnett Road and west of Lawnview Avenue. It will install a new natural gas system with safety enhancements for 440 customers in Springfield and replace approximately three miles of underground steel pipe with plastic pipe.

The project is part of the gas company’s 25-year, $2 billion project to improve 20,000 miles of underground pipe in Ohio. Initial work is expected to begin next week and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Saudi Steel in Expansion Upswing

Saudi Steel has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with OTO Mills, Italy to purchase a new tube mill line with an option to buy two more lines.

The total deal is worth 8 million euros and is financed by the Italian export agency. The 8th line will add more than 110,000 tons of tube capacity to SSP’s existing capacity. Oto Mills is an Italian-based world’s leading manufacturer of tube mill systems and have supplied hundreds of tube mills system to customers around the globe.

Tata Steel's pipe mill, in Hartlepool, is reporting throughput improvement following installation of a new internal diameter welder line by engineering specialist Cordell Group working with Siemens Industry.

Siemens developed a bespoke control system that overcame previous operational efficiency issues and delivered improved accuracy and flexibility. Having sourced new welding equipment from Germany, Tata Steel looked to Cordell to provide initial designs for a pipe handling assembly capable of receiving 16 to 42 inch pipe diameters, weighing up to 13 tonnes.
