TATA Steel, Europe's second largest steel producer, has announced a multi million pound contract with KOGAS (Korea Gas Corporation) for the manufacture and supply of pipe in the Middle East. The deal, between KOGAS and Tata Steel’s Energy and Power division has seen the company manufacture 110km of line pipe and coatings for the Kirkuk to Baiji Dry Gas Project in Iraq. A total of c.10,000 tonnes of line pipe was manufactured and coated at the company’s 42 inch Mill in Hartlepool and has now been shipped to Iraq for installation. Steel production once again is a hot ticket in South Lorain as Republic Steel has begun melting metal with the company’s new electric arc furnace.


Republic Steel announced it has begun hot commissioning of the new furnace, an $85 million investment that is expected to create nearly 450 jobs in the next several years.  The Canton-based company already has hired more than 300 workers for the startup and they completed the furnace’s first heat, a Republic Steel spokesman said.

Welding skills in particular could help land one of 50-60 manufacturing jobs coming next year with the opening of an pipe making plant on the site of the old Buick City complex in Flint.

American Cast Iron Pipe Co., based in Birmingham, Alabama, announced at a press conference Nov. 13 that it will build a 200,000 square-foot factory on approximately 18 acres of the sprawling 413.6 acre former automotive complex.

The plant will manufacture SprialWeld steel pipe for the Karegnondi Water Authority (KWA) pipeline being built from Port Huron to Flint to serve Sanilac, Lapeer and Genesee counties which covers more than 2,400 square miles.
