Tenaris S.A.'s first-quarter earnings rose a  better-than-expected 40% as the steel-tube maker saw sales in its key tubing  business rise along with margins.

Rising drilling activity has boosted results for the maker of steel pipes,  many of which are used by the oil and gas industry. The company has forecast  higher sales this year to oil and gas customers, particularly of premium  products, but sees lower dry gas drilling activity. The company is based in  Luxembourg, but has a strong presence in Argentina.

The Ohio steel industry, led by a drilling boom in the gas and oil industry and a resuscitated demand for cars and light trucks, is growing again. Steel makers across the state are racing to keep pace with plans to add a total of two million square feet of production space at a cost of $1.5 billion.

Aker Solutions has signed a contract with Woodside Energy Limited for the manufacture and supply of electro-hydraulic steel tube umbilicals (EHU) for the Greater Western Flank (GWF) Phase 1 project on the north-west coast of Australia. Contract value is undisclosed.

The scope of work includes project management, design, engineering, manufacturing and verification testing of two steel tube umbilicals at a total length of 17 kilometres. The contract also covers all associated ancillary equipment required for transportation to Australia and interface with the existing development.

China’s daily crude steel output surged to a record of above 2 million tonnes in early April, sustaining last month’s rapid pace, although an industry group warned of a slow down in momentum due to moderating demand. Tata Steel has been awarded the contract to supply the pipe for Enterprise Products Partners LP's crude oil export pipeline.

It will involve delivering more than 48,000 metric tonnes of steel pipe from its 42-inch mill in Hartlepool.

It said it would secure jobs at the site where more than 700 people work.

Tata Steel said the contract value was in the "high tens of millions of dollars".

It will provide 105 miles (169km) of 18-inch diameter line pipe. It will be laid at depths of up to 7,000ft.  The pipe is for the Lucius Development Project in the Gulf of Mexico's Keathley Canyon area.

Lock Joint Tube is planning to spend $8 million to $9 million on new equipment and a building expansion at its property on Walnut Street, south of Sample Street.Company officials explained their plans to the South Bend Redevelopment Commission on Tuesday. They're applying to the city for a tax abatement.The new equipment will allow Lock Joint Tube to expand the types of products it makes, according to commission documents. Voestalpine AG (VOE), Austria’s biggest steelmaker, is in talks to supply Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PETR4) with tube plate for deepwater pipes in the Atlantic basin off Brazil.

“Technically this isn’t possible today,” Voestalpine Chief Executive Officer Wolfgang Eder told reporters in Vienna. “One still needs a lot of preparation. We are in negotiations and in two years our development will be advanced enough to go down to 4,000 meters (13,000 feet).” The talks are exclusive, he said, declining to provide further details.
